(Although Parisians used to bathe in the Seine, the practice was gradually banned in the 18th century for reasons of modesty and health. “We became aware of pollution extremely early on, in fact, even before the Revolution,” says Brice. Under Haussmann in the 19th century, a vast network of sewers was created, but wastewater continued to be discharged into the river.)
